guatemala en nuestra corazón
Upon demand from students, JUNTOS gladly opened up a second trip to Guatemala, allowing students from all schools a chance to attend. For the first time, JUNTOS traveled to Guatemala in January for two weeks with dancers from LINES/Dominican University, SUNY Purchase, as well as with Michael McBride, guest from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Beginning at San Marcos la Laguna, we held performances and workshops for the diverse community of indigenous and foreigners that reside in the small town. Our next stop, Retalhuleu, was spent with our dancing friends at IRTRA’s theme park Xetulul, where we taught dance workshops for the second year in a row. Next: Xela! We taught dance workshops to salsa dancers from Bakanos Dance Rodriguez, a dance studio and company directed by Nestor Rodriguez. Before heading to Guatemala City, we performed at Casa N’oj with our salsa friends. In Guatemala City, we finished our tour with performances at two live-in centers for HIV+ children (one also an orphanage and foster home), as well as for a community helping young adults get off the streets and out of street life.
