Master (this is the h1 tag)

Don’t manually add h1 tags… they are added as page titles and guide search engines, so multiples will confuse Google

Adding/subtracting menu items:

Giving a page a parent attribute will automatically add it to the sidebar menu for that parent page.

i.e. if you made this page a child of “The Collective” it would appear in that pages sidebar.

However, giving a page a parent will also change the URL for that page. If it is being linked to from anywhere, that link will break so it is best not to move pages around unless they need to be moved.  If it is a new page altogether than there is nothing to worry about.

If you want to add or remove a page from the “main menu” at the top of the page or the “CTA menu” (Get involved, Donate); you can do so through the menu interface:

  • Through the WP admin panel, click on “Appearance” and then on “Menus”
  • Select which of the two menus you want to edit by clicking on the appropriate tab at the top
  • Expand each existing item to delete
  • Add pages in the pages box on the bottom left by checking them and selecting “Add to menu”
  • Organize menu items by dragging them into place
  • When you finished click “Save Menu”

Removing Headers from a specific Page:

To remove the page title from a specific page open the page from the wordpress admin panel and change the Template.  In the right hand column under page attributes, choose the template “” and click “update”.

Categorizing Blog Posts:

Categorizing Blog Posts is how you will organize a lot of your content for other pages as well as on the blog.  Below is a list of Categories, when to use them and where they will populate: (You can use as many categories as you want)

  • Gallery: use this for either a gallery of photos or a video. Posts in this category will show on the “Look” page
  • Letter from Dancers: self explanatory
  • Event: use this category for anything relating to events (announcements, summaries, thank yous, etc…). Posts in this category will show on the “Past Events” page
  • Collective News: use this for any internal announcements.

Adding Images to Blog Post Excerpts:

To add an image thumbnail to your blogposts, you need to add a featured image.  While you are editing the blog post, specify your featured image in the “Featured Image” box on the bottom right side of the screen.

Note: the featured image will not appear on the single post page. Instead, the images you add into the post or through the gallery will appear and you should select one to also add as the thumbnail.

Manually Changing the width of images with-in a page or post:

To manually change the width of an image, click on the text version of the post, find the img tag that holds the image and within the <img /> tag after the src=”” add/edit the width=”” attribute and delete the height=”” attribute (the image will automatically scale to the width). The maximum width of the content area is 650px.

Adding Columns into a page or post

Create a column group with the [column-group] shortcode, then add columns to the group with the [column] shortcode, like this:

[column-group]
    [column]This is my first column[/column]
    [column]This is my second column[/column]
[/column-group]

You can also span columns, like this:

[column-group]
[column span="2"]This is my first column spanned across two columns.[/column]
    [column]This is my second column[/column]
    [column]This is my third column[/column]
[/column-group]

The first column will be twice as large as the second or third.

For an example see the code on the ‘home new’ page.
